Embroidery is the fine art of embellishing an item with the different colors and stitches to create a design or logo that enhances the garment.

It starts with the good design and a good quality garment. The item is then embroidered by a modern, up-to-date machinery run by an experienced operator. Embroidery is a high-end product. It should not be put on garments that cannot withstand the density of the thread or justify the cost of the process.

Embroidery cost is determined by the size of the design and thus the stitches in the actual running of the design. It is also determined by the quantity of the order. Usually quotes will include the stitch count and the cost at various quantities.

The quality of the embroidered piece is affected by the following:

  1. quality of artwork
  2. quality of digitized file
  3. type of garment
  4. embroiderer's skill
  5. customer's expectations*

The price depends on:

  1. quality of artwork
  2. size of digitized file or stitch count
  3. type and quantity of garments
  4. Placement and complexity of the embroidery
  5. Type of customer. i.e. retail, wholesale, team, corporate or other

The speed depends on:

  1. Approval time and process
  2. time of the year or season
  3. size of file or production time
  4. quantity and quality of garments
  5. availability of supplies

*Customer expectations are very subjective.

Good embroidery is an art. It is not something that can be inspected with a magnifying glass and measured by rulers. Garments are not perfectly executed nor are do they have a smooth tight surface like paper. Logos with small letters and thin lines have to be looked at in embroidery terms (ie. needle and thread doesn’t act like ink and paper). A good embroidery should flow like the garment and should enhance the overall look. It should not be a billboard or an ad. It should be elegant, not too fussy and wordy. No one stops to read your phone number or website nor do they look for the legal status of your company. Every logo is different and each embroidery machine or machine head embroiders differently. We run our machines at a slower speed to produce better results. A good experienced embroiderer and digitizer will try to produce the best possible result. The end result can be foreseen during approval process.

Digitizing or punching is a process that tells the embroidery machine where to start and end the design, what type of stitch to use, when to change color and when to trim and stop. In other words the artwork must be converted into a language that the embroidery machine can understand. Once the logo/design is digitized at a certain size it cannot be increased or decreased by very much without compromising the quality so size is very important. Location of the embroidery is one clue. Most customers prefer a size that will serve most of their needs, i.e. left chest and hat size. These locations are usually not more than 2 1/4" high and 4 1/2" long.

Artwork is the key. The better the artwork, the better the design!

We prefer vectorized files either ai files from illustrator (10) or eps from coreldraw10.
We can use:

  • JPEG
  • Business cards
  • Letterheads
  • Envelopes
  • Line drawings
  • Faxes
  • Existing sewouts

Once the artwork is brought to size it is scanned and used as a template for the digitizer to work with.

A good digitizer will keep in mind the material as well as the type of the garment in allowing for the push and pull of the fabric. Years of experience guides the digitizer to a beautiful logo that is also production friendly.

Some layouts may have to be modified due to font size and legibility or because it would be too costly to run. This is generally explained during the approval stage. Once we get the go ahead we proceed to program your artwork so the embroidery machines can read your logo or design. The digitized file is then sewn out in the colors chosen on a swatch for approval by the client. After the initial sew-out is approved we can either sew a sample on the garment or proceed with production. If this process is not followed step by step, it can result in disappointment or spoilage. We can not compensate our customers for this type of loss if they skip these steps. (Please review our Company Policy).

Ownership of Digitized Files

Unless otherwise arranged prior to production, all digitizing of your logo remains the property of Threadworks International and will be maintained at our facility for our exclusive usage in executing your orders. Because our policy is to render digitizing services for production orders in whole or in part (depending on the circumstances) on a cost recovery basis, any transfer to the client of rights to digitized materials prepared or contracted by our personnel is subject to reasonable release fees, commensurate with the creative services rendered at a value as determined solely by us. Currently if a customer requires a copy of a logo they have already paid a separate digitizing preparation fee on a past invoice, we charge $20 for a copy of the .dst file and require 24 hour notice.

Company policy

We recommend that all orders are filled out properly with thorough instructions and sew-outs. Your P.O. or original paperwork should be attached to our work order, as well as your contact information. A sew-out in the colors you have chosen should be attached as well as any samples embroidered and approved ahead of time. At the time we digitize or set-up the artwork we include one sew-out. All other color waves and versions of the original sew-out shall be charged at the appropriate cost.

The steps in the average embroidery order and time estimates are:

  1. Submission of good artwork and approval of size to be digitized. (1-2 days)
  2. Digitizing and sewing the logo in colors specified in the work order. (2-3 days)
  3. Customers approval of the design and colors as well as placement. (1+ days)
  4. Embroidered sample for customer approval. (1+ days)
  5. Delivery of order and sorting and/or counting. (1-5 days)
  6. Embroidery and finishing including final count. (3-7 days for up to 200 pcs.)

If the above procedures are not followed we can not be held responsible for mistakes or spoilage. For contract or "embroidery only" orders we do not count the order nor sort it by size or color. It is the customer’s responsibility to check the order ahead. If you want to count it with us upon delivery we will arrange for a count at an extra charge. We are not responsible for any shortages. We only count after the job is done. Please note if the
approval process is somehow delayed then the estimated time for completion is pushed back as well. Please do your best to help us meet your deadlines.
As a rule we do steam and fold all regular orders. If an order requires extra handling please discuss ahead of time.
We expect our customers to treat us as they would want to be treated so we can make this a mutually enjoyable experience !
